THE ONLY TOWN WHERE I SEEM NORMAL

If Thunder Bay had an Official Curmudgeon, I'd have the job. I wouldn't consider myself a crank; but, having lived here now for more than 40 years, I've certainly morphed into a local character. I began life in the 'burbs of Chicago, then began my training as a Canadian in Montreal. I like to say I'm an Expo '67 Canadian. But once I moved to Thunder Bay, I felt as if I'd come home. And when my American cousins ask why I like the place so much, I tell them it's the only place where I seem normal. What can you say about a city where people hold a yard sale in the parking lot of a crematorium, or where the mayor introduces Queen Elizabeth as "Prince Philip's lovely wife", or where the town once appointed a local madame as Census Commissioner? Did a film with the National Film Board about local history and freelanced for years at the local CBC outlet contributing items and documentaries to the National Radio Network. I should be living on blackmail, given all the skeletons I've uncovered over the years; but people here seem proud of them, so blackmail just doesn't work.
